On Thursday 25 May, at 10.30 a.m., the workshop 'What are shelters' will take place at the Biblioteca Montserrat Roig climatic conditions and how we can benefit from them', by the head of the Sant Feliu City Council's Environment Unit, Montse Díaz; the area coordinator of the Teleassistance Service, Albina Duran; and an environmental educator from the Compartim un Futur program of the AMB.
Heat waves, increasingly frequent and intense, have important effects on the health of the population, especially among the elderly and children. For this reason, various projects are being carried out by the administrations in order to alleviate the consequences of this increase in warm episodes. One of these initiatives is the creation of the Metropolitan Network of Climate Shelters (XMRC), promoted by the Area Metropolitana de Barcelona.
Climate shelters are accessible spaces that can provide conditions of thermal comfort, rest and safety in the face of extreme weather events, such as heat waves. In Sant Feliu, spaces such as Montserrat Roig Library, Europa Park, Llobregat Park and Palau Falguera gardens are part of this network of climate shelters.
The workshop, open to everyone, is organized by the Provincial Council of Barcelona, the Teleassistance Service, the AMB, the Sant Feliu de Llobregat City Council and the Montserrat Roig Library.
This activity is part of P6. Project to create climate shelters in the urban environment, from the Action Plan of the Sant Feliu de Llobregat Urban Agenda. This Plan, approved by the Municipal Plenum of July 2022, aims to establish the foundations and transformative projects that must guide the development of the city towards a more resilient, inclusive, safe and sustainable model in the horizon of next 10 years, and in line with the urban change that will occur in the area freed by the burying of the roads.
