Between the 8th and the 21st of November, the public consultation took place on the project that was to guide the urbanization of the freed space that will result in the undergrounding of the train tracks.
This participation process has been a milestone for our city for three reasons that can each be summed up in one word:
1. Multitudinary. It is the biggest exercise of direct democracy that has taken place in the city; 6,300 people participated, more than 16% of the census.
2. Including. For the first time, participation by electronic means has been combined with in-person participation, which has allowed more than 2,500 people to participate in a single day lived as an election day, with a census extended to people between 16 and 18 years.
3. Historical. It is the first large-scale consultation in the city, but we have inaugurated the historic series of those that will take place every third weekend in November from now on, as provided for in the Citizen Participation Regulations, approved by the council in 2018.
The Government team is aware that, despite the resounding success of participation, it is necessary to continue working to achieve even greater involvement in city issues, to make forms of direct democracy one of the ways to deepen the our democratic system. The refinement of democracy is what allows societies to develop by improving people's well-being.
On the contrary, groups that want to deny, misrepresent or limit the rights and participation of citizens, either in the name of a misunderstood austerity, of a supposed technical expertise, or for simple historical opportunism, playing the role of children clumsy and resentful of a past time, the only future they have is crisis and disappearance.
Perfecting democracy means at the same time fighting against unemployment, for the right to housing, for decent pensions and wages, and for high-quality public education and healthcare. These are all questions that, as you know, are at the center of Sant Feliu en Comú Podem's political agenda.
In Sant Feliu we have taken a step to accompany this path that we must travel towards greater democracy and well-being for everyone and which I am sure will be joined by more and more fellow citizens. To do it folds with an even firmer step and an even wider look.
